The publishing project, the What I Bear books, is the concluding phase of a series of ten performances, actions or installations put on in the period from 2011 to 2013 in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, entitled What I bear, in which ten Zagreb curators and curatorial cooperatives took part.
How it works
The curator sends the artist to Paris to carry out a certain task. She goes to Paris, carries out the task, exactly following the instructions. On her return to Zagreb, in the Museum of Contemporary Art, she produces a performance, action or installation that comments on the task or the commission. The rules of the project precisely determined the relationship with the client: the client has complete freedom to decide on the nature of the task set, while the artist is entirely free to use all and any elements for the completion of the work. She does not intervene in the definition of the commission, just as the client does not interfere in the preparation and production of the artist’s work.
Ten works, performances, actions, videos, photographs or installations were presented during the two-year period in the Museum of Contemporary Art.
During the two years, the What I Bear project became a platform on which cooperation took place concretely and in action, on which original ideas were made available, personal stories were interwoven with a hybrid structure of personal and public contents and an experimental observation procedure.
The book project What I Bear contains five books: the artist’s book of the whole documentation of the project; a text by curator Tihomir Milovac, three dialogues about the project with curators Olga Majcen Linn and Sandra Križić Roban and Ružica Šimunović, critic and curator, as well as four translations of French authors, translated into Croatian for the first time:
